Marine Operational Roles

Ships Engineer

The beautiful and historic Paddle Steamer Kingswear Castle II celebrated her Centenary in 2024. Following this important milestone we have a very exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join the vessel as the “Ships Engineer”.

This is a truly unique opportunity to become one of only a handful of people fortunate enough to be able to describe themselves an Engineer aboard a working, coal fired, paddle steamer passenger vessel.

The successful candidate will eventually become responsible for the scheduled maintenance of all the ships’ systems and, on a day-to-day basis, will be required to carry out routine maintenance and inspections, raising and maintaining steam and subsequently controlling the engine throughout the working day of her scheduled services.

The position would suit a hardworking, self-motivated individual who would be keen to fully immerse themselves in the whole experience of working on this very special ship. A keen interest in mechanical engineering and an understanding of steam propelled machinery would be advantageous.

Full training and a competitive remuneration package will be offered.

If this opportunity is of interest to you then please apply via email at paulmerrington@dsrrb.co.uk in order to be forwarded the relevant job application pack.

Railway Operational Roles

Assistant Infrastructure Manager

The Dart Valley Railway Company operates the Dartmouth Steam Railway in South Devon, which runs between Paignton and Kingswear and is currently seeking to appoint an Assistant Infrastructure Manager, who will report to the Infrastructure Manager and be involved in assisting with maintaining the physical safety of the railway’s infrastructure and in the day to day undertaking of all works of maintenance and repair of the infrastructure. Prospective applicants for the post must be able to provide relevant evidence of practical experience in Permanent Way maintenance work, ideally within a traditional jointed track and S&C environment. Additional practical experience of P.W. renewals work, P.W. design work and other relevant structures, track drainage, earthworks and associated railway civil engineering types of work would be beneficial.

The ideal applicant will already have had some prior supervisory experience of both P.W. and railway civil engineering works. Good IT literacy will be an essential skill, especially with Microsoft Office Word and Excel and thus be able to assist with the PW team’s infrastructure works planning and budgeting requirements and also with the requirement to maintain departmental work and safety records for both audit and reference purposes. Any relevant technical or academic qualifications would be an advantage, but it will be essential that applicants can provide evidence of being a practical, hands on team player.

We offer a competitive remuneration package.

Reviews

  • Perfect day - We have done this several times over the years and is a fantastic day out. The steam train ride is great, but the cruise makes it. The commentary is very good and funny. Would definitely recommend this trip if in the area.
  • Absolutely fabulous experience - The whole day was fabulous with great weather and steam trains. The line is one of the most scenic you will ever experience and is a must visit if in the area. I will definitely be back again :-)
  • Brilliant - Brilliant day out. We booked the train and cruise and had a great time. What's not to like; steam train, ferry river crossing and river cruise. Then all in reverse. Great day out!
